Maybe you were practicing for the chainsaw juggling competition and missed a crucial catch. Maybe your dog decided to dig his way into the basement. Regardless of how it happened, sometimes laminate planks get damaged and replacement is the only answer. Luckily, replacing a single laminate flooring plank, even one smack in the middle of the room, can be easier than you may think.

First, it’s not necessary to tear up the entire floor and start over. That’s good news. Since most major manufacturers, such as Quick Step, Armstrong and Bruce, design laminate flooring planks with interlocking edges, nails and adhesives usually aren’t necessary during the initial install. And if it’s not glued down, it’s much easier to remove.

Some Laminates from Armstrong

Suppose the damaged plank is in the center of the room, surrounded by undamaged planks on all sides. Grab ruler or a carpenter’s square and a marker. Use the square and market to draw diagonal lines from opposite corners so that the lines divide the plank into four triangles. Then use a rotary saw with a laminate blade to cut the plank along the lines. Use extreme caution with this step, so that you don’t cut the underlayment, subfloor, or adjacent planks. Also, most laminates are around 3/8” thick, so be sure to double check the plank thickness before cutting. Use a flat head screwdriver to pry the pieces up and discard them.

A Floor done with Quick Step laminates

To prepare the replacement plank, you’ll need to snap off three of the four tongues so the plank can be threaded into place. The remaining tongue should be on one of the shorter edges. With caution, apply a thin coating of glue to the exposed tongues of the undamaged planks on the floor – the surfaces that will touch the replacement plank. From an angle of roughly 45 degrees, slide the remaining tongue of the replacement plank into the appropriate groove and slowly lower the plank to the floor. Press firmly into place, and quickly clean up any glue that may seep through the joints before it dries. Weigh down the replacement plank with books or boxes for 72hrs, and bang, you’re done.

All in all, a laminate floor single-plank replacement is a task nearly anyone can accomplish.
